If anyone walks around many of our towns we find areas which are ‘green’ in the sense they are not built on, yet are wildlife deserts – invariably just a patch of grass, which is mown!

There is considerable scope here for some work to turn these into more beneficial green areas.  Depending on the size and location options include:
Trees;
Small trees or shrubs;
Wildflowers.

Leaving them as grass perpetuates the idea that this is what ‘green’ areas should look like.

We need a policy to manage urban 'green' areas!
Open space with scope for improvement!
Open space with scope for improvement!

Turning them into more diverse, wildlife friendly areas not only improves the environment but reinforces the idea that such areas should be ‘wild’ not bare grassy wastelands.

It might encourage residents to take a more pro-active role in making their gardens wildlife friendly rather than the ‘deserts’ that many are.
